Happiness Negotiation

View of the Swiss Alps from Grindelwald First. This trip was testament to my own 'happiness negotiation' and was the first thing I did on leaving my corporate role.

Are you putting off happiness today for a promise tomorrow?

(That's a deep question for a Tuesday)

We often endure something today on the promise that it things will get better tomorrow:

  • I'll check my emails on a Sunday afternoon because it will make my Monday morning easier

  • I'll work with that irksome client because it pays the bills until something more in line with what I really want comes along

But what actually happens?

  • You have even more to worry about when Monday comes (and have robbed yourself of valuable weekend downtime)

  • You're too caught up with unsatisfying busyness to give time and attention to creating your ideal business

(I have done all of the above and more. "Stick with the mentally-damaging job because it will pay for a better retirement...?" Guilty! 🙋‍♂️)

The Happiness Negotiation

I call this the "Happiness Negotiation". We deliberately choose to give away our happiness in the moment, convincing ourself that it will be worth it tomorrow.

What if we choose to enjoy (not endure) something today on the promise that it things can also get better tomorrow?

What if we take a small step – a deliberate positive action – towards 'what we really want' now?

  • How would that make us feel?

  • How would that affect our bravery, our confidence?

  • Our mood?

When I told myself "I am putting my happiness first" (the day I wrote my resignation letter), it was as if someone had let sunlight into my life for the first time in years.

What's that one small step for you?

I'm pretty sure you deserve a little more sunshine in your life.

And if you need some help with your negotiation tactics... 🙋‍♂️
