Here’s something to contemplate this week:
What do you tell yourself you’re capable of?
And what are you actually capable of?
At first glance, the two answers might feel almost identical. Or at least similar enough not to worry about. But let’s take another look.
Ask yourself again. Say the answers out loud or scribble them down.
Is There a Difference?
Answer one from these two self-esteem questions reflects your inner monologue's opinion. This opinion is heavily shaped by your current levels of confidence, fear, past setbacks, your inner critic, and your historic beliefs about what’s “reasonable” and safe.
Answer two is rooted in fact. It’s based on your track record, your resilience, your lived experience, the skills you’ve developed, and the direction you're heading.
If there is a difference, then there is a gap for you to close.
It could be that your internal voice is underestimating you. Or, occasionally, it might be overestimating your readiness in a way that’s not helpful. We’ll save that curveball for another day.
Either way, this misalignment matters. Over time, your inner voice shapes your decisions and possibly limits your actions based on what it believes you can do, rather than what’s actually true.
"What you believe, you become."
A Challenge Related to These Self-Esteem Questions
Here's something for you to try this week:
Reflect on Answer two.
Write down your actual achievements, skills, experience, and learnings.
Sit with them. Let them feel real.
Share them with someone you trust.
Notice how this nudges Answer one a little closer to the truth.
Understanding Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is a crucial aspect of our lives. It influences how we perceive ourselves and how we interact with the world. When we have a healthy self-esteem, we are more likely to take risks and pursue our goals.
But what happens when our self-esteem is low? We might hesitate to take action. We might shy away from opportunities. This is where the gap between perception and reality can become a chasm.
The Impact of Self-Esteem on Decision-Making
Low self-esteem can cloud our judgment. It can lead us to make decisions based on fear rather than fact. We may think we can’t achieve something simply because we don’t believe in ourselves.
Conversely, overestimating our abilities can lead to reckless decisions. It’s essential to find that sweet spot where our self-perception aligns with our actual capabilities.
Closing the Gap
To close the gap between who you think you are and who you truly are, you need to take actionable steps. Reflect on your achievements. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small.
Consider seeking feedback from trusted friends or mentors. They can provide a different perspective on your abilities.
Seeking Professional Help
If you find it challenging to bridge this gap on your own, consider reaching out for support. Professional guidance can be invaluable.
To corroborate this thinking, UK charity Mind UK highlights how self-esteem impacts our willingness to take healthy risks. Perhaps this challenge will assist your current state of 'willingness'.
And of course, if you want help closing that gap between what you think you can do and what you actually can do, you know where I am.
Embracing Your True Potential
In conclusion, embracing your true potential is a journey. It requires patience, reflection, and sometimes a little help. Remember, the only limits that exist are the ones we place on ourselves.
So, let’s take a step forward together. Let’s bridge that gap and unlock the possibilities that await!
